The NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation Course is designed to teach students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for owning
and operating a specific pistol type in a safe and efficient manner.
NRA FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation is designed to provide a hands-on introduction to the safe handling and proper
orientation to one specific pistol action type. This course includes classroom, dry-practice, and live-fire development classes at the
NRA Fundamental rules for safe gun handling are taught:
ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
These are the necessary building blocks in which all are based upon. From these basic steps, students will learn
safe gun handling, pistol parts and their operations, range rules, shooting from the bench rest position, two handed shooting positions,
cleaning their pistol, and continued opportunities for skill development.
Students complete this course by participating in live range fire exercises, demonstrating the practice of safe gun handling, and
passing a written exam.
